Potsdamer Platz, or “the Platz” as it is affectionately known by locals, is a bustling transport and commercial hub in the heart of Berlin. Positioned at the crossing of several major streets and rail lines, it is one of the busiest intersections in Europe. It all began when King Frederick William III of Prussia issued a decree to develop this area in 1824, making it one of the oldest squares in the city. The early 20th century saw Potsdamer Platz become an important business center full of offices, hotels, restaurants and cabarets, becoming known as the “Times Square of Berlin”.
It was during World War II that Potsdamer Platz really became infamous; reduced to rubble due to Allied bombing, it became a desolate no-man’s land between East and West Berlin during the Cold War as both sides built walls to divide their countries along the former square. The reunification of Germany saw Potsdamer Platz transformed into what it is today- with its iconic architecture including Daimler City, Ritz Carlton Hotel and Sony Center among others providing a beautiful backdrop for the area's attractions such as shopping centers, museums and cinemas- making it one of Germany’s most visited tourist destinations.
