The Reichstag Building in Berlin is a historic building, which stands as an important symbol of Germany's history and democracy. Located on the edge of the Tiergarten Park in the heart of Germany's capital city, it has been home to both the country's parliament and its government since 1871. It was designed by renowned German architect Paul Wallot, who is also known for his work on other historical buildings such as the Bismarck Tower.
The building suffered significant damage during World War II and underwent extensive renovations during the 1950s. In addition to its striking neo-Renaissance design, what makes this building unique is that it incorporates large glass cupolas located at each corner and a central dome, providing spectacular views of Berlin. A popular tourist destination, visitors can take guided tours around the building or even take part in a parliamentary debate.
Since 1999, when Germany adopted a new constitution, the Reichstag Building has been home to the German Bundestag (parliament). Inside you can find one of the main debating chambers — The Plenary Hall — where important debates are held and laws are passed. On top of this there are many interesting features including several galleries containing impressive works of art ranging from historic painting to sculptures. One gallery even houses a copy of Käthe Kollwitz's famous sculpture – Mother with her Dead Son – commemorating soldiers killed in WWI.
The Reichstag Building stands today as a tribute to Germany's past suffering and rebirth following reunification and is one of Berlin’s most iconic landmarks that continues to be visited by millions every year.
