About Hotels in Victory Column!

The Victory Column in Berlin is a monument located in the centre of the German capital. It was originally erected by Prussian king Frederick William IV in 1873 to commemorate the Prussian victory over Denmark during the Second Schleswig War.

During World War II, it was moved from its original location and reconstructed at its current site on Königsplatz (now Theodor-Heuss-Platz) in Berlin's Tiergarten park. The column stands at a height of 67 metres, and is topped by an 8 metre tall bronze sculpture of a winged Victory goddess, holding aloft a golden laurel wreath and iron cross.

The monument has been used as a backdrop for various events, including Hitler’s annual Nazi Party rallies held during the Third Reich. After the war it underwent restoration work, which was completed in 1981.

Today it serves as an important landmark and tourist attraction in Berlin, providing views of the city from its observation platform at its peak. There are numerous sculptures surrounding the base of the column which depict historical figures who were involved with Prussia’s military victories over different nations throughout history. These include Generals Count Rochus von Virchow, Edwin Freiherr von Manteuffel and Otto von Bismarck amongst many others. The surrounding plaza also features four granite pillars representing Peace, Justice, Freedom and Loyalty - attributed by King Frederick William IV to symbolise his reign's commitment to these ideals during his reign from 1840-1861. In addition to this, there are two large cannons near the base which were captured from Napoleon's army following their defeat at Leipzig in 1813.
